Non-Executive Director

Prof Yosuf Veriava

Professor Yosuf Veriava (better known as Joe) has had a long and illustrious medical career during which he made significant contributions to bioethics in South Africa.

As one of the six South African doctors who famously took the SAMDC to court over the unethical conduct of the doctors involved in the Steve Biko case, Prof Veriava is well-known for his commitment to the values of justice and fairness in medicine.

In April 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa bestowed the Order of Luthuli in silver to Prof Veriava for his contribution to the medical profession in South Africa.

He spent many years heading up the Department of Internal medicine at the University of Witwatersrand and is still with the university in a specialist advisor role. He plays a pivotal role at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics.

Prof Veriava currently sits on the Ministerial Task Team of the medical training of South African Students in Cuba. He also assists the MEC of Health in Gauteng as a co-convenor of the Independent Panel on Patient Safety and medico-legal litigation.
