HIV/AIDS - Where does The Aurum Institute fit in?

South Africa has one of the largest HIV epidemics with an estimated 270 000 new infections per year and 7.1 million people living with HIV in 2016. Similar challenges exist with the burden of tuberculosis (TB), with an incidence of 834 cases per 100 000 population, translating to about 450 000 new TB infections1. In response to this, South Africa in its National Strategic Plan for HV, STIs and TB 2017 -2022 (NSP) set goals to reduce the new HIV infections to below 100 000, and reduce TB incidence to 584 cases per 100 000 population (315 000 new cases/year), by the end of 2022.

The Aurum Institute (Aurum) and its consortium partners are funded through various sources to conduct implementation science and clinical research on HIV and TB in South Africa.
