The Aurum Institute is proud to announce that Professor Geoffrey Setswe, Managing Director: Implementation Research Division (IRD), has been appointed as a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
In this position at the university’s Department of Health Studies, Setswe's goal is to improve research capacity by supervising PhD candidates and contributing to research publications.
“This appointment means a lot to me because it is important to contribute to the academic and research discourse in public health and to help produce the next generation of public health experts at one of the largest universities in the world,” he said.
Setswe has supervised or co-supervised 45 completed Masters and Doctoral degrees in public health and health sciences and has more than 70 publications under his belt. In 2020, he was appointed by the International AIDS Society as a reviewer of abstracts and as a track committee member. He was also appointed to the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) Strategic Information Task Team and become a Principal Investigator in a 5-year NIH-funded project focusing on Two-way Texting for Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision Follow up in South Africa.
Expertise and practical skills
He will bring his expertise to his work at UNISA as well as practical skills. “I will share practical research implementation expertise while I will also learn about exciting research work done by post-graduate candidates and colleagues using new theoretical/research perspectives in public health.”
Knowledge sharing
The knowledge sharing will continue at Aurum, as Setswe plans to assist the organisation to produce 80 peer-reviewed publications by building the capacity of our research teams to write for publication. “Although the COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating, it offered some of us an opportunity to work from home with increased productivity. I am hoping our IRD team will this year achieve or better still, exceed our grant funding and research targets and will also complete our research projects on target, on budget and to the Aurum standards,” said Setswe.
