Group Senior Technical Specialist: HIV

Dr Gugu Ngubane

MBCHB

Dr Ngubane has over 20 years of experience as a public health medical doctor and holds a MBCHB degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal, a postgraduate Diploma in HIV management from the College of Medicine SA and is an Oliver Tambo Fellow in Health Leadership with the University of Cape Town.

She began her career into public health through the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmissions (PMTCT) programme pilot in 2002 and health system preparedness for the ART roll out in 2004. She then moved on to HAST (HIV/AIDS, STI's and Tuberculosis) programme and has also worked in the strategic plan for Maternal, Newborn, Child and Women's Health, Health Management Information Systems, the initial phases of the NHI preparedness and health systems strengthening, and the recent national COVID-19 pandemic response.

Dr Ngubane has held management and leadership roles as a clinical manager in a district hospital, an executive, a programme and technical lead supporting NDOH through donor funded programmes. She is solution orientated and results driven and has interest in exploring local solutions of attaining universal health access to care (UHC), multisectoral approaches to address social determinants of health, to reduce disease burden and preventable deaths, especially from HIV and TB.
