South African Men’s Health Monitoring (SAMHMS II) study - HIV testing

This was a bio-behavioural survey (BBS) and Population Size Estimation (PSE) of men who have sex with men (MSM) using Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) approach to estimate the HIV prevalence and recency of infection, proportion living with HIV who are aware of their status, on ART, and are virally suppressed and to identify risk behaviours for HIV among MSM in 3 selected cities).

Recency study - HIV testing

This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a rapid recency test for HIV Infection. IRD researchers and partners used the Asante recency test to differentiate between recent (less than 12 months) and long-term infections (> 12 months) 10 facilities in Ekurhuleni District. Recency testing will help health services to increase the numbers for index testing and to help identify hotspots for new infections.

INSTI study - HIV testing

This was a demonstration of a novel, scalable model of provider-initiated, facility based, opt-out HIV testing using INSTI among adults attending 10 clinics in Ekurhuleni with the objectives of increasing the proportion of eligible clinic attendees tested for HIV and assessing the acceptability (uptake; acceptance) and feasibility (population reached, positivity rates, clinic flow, and patient experiences) of INSTI.

2wT study - HIV prevention

The study will test an mHealth intervention to reduce VMMC follow-up workload while preserving patient safety. Researchers will use two-way mobile phone texts to provide in-person review only for men who indicate a desire or need for follow-up. Text-based, post-procedure VMMC care could reduce unnecessary visits and remove barriers for VMMC clients without reduction in quality care. Reduced in-person follow-up could also free healthcare workers to perform additional VMMC surgeries.
