Aurum African Youth Month

Aurum African Youth Month

On the 1st November, organisations around the continent celebrated Africa Youth Day. Last year the African Union Heads of State and Government declared the theme for 2017 as ‘Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth’.

There are different definitions of youth. The United Nations define youth as those between 15-24 years old. While the African Union define youth as those between 15-35 years old. As an African organisation, Aurum defines youth as those between 15-35 years old.
So what is Aurum doing for youth? A whole lot. We've got exciting initiatives that engage young people across the country. Here are a few of them:
  • Aurum UnlockD The Aurum UnlockD Initiative is an collaborative project between the Aurum Institute and UnlockD which aims to decrease the spread of HIV and reduce the high levels of youth unemployment through a holistic program which aims to provide learners with 1-year of skills development and work experience through a learnership. The project has kicked off successfully with 60 learners based in Ekurhuleni fulfilling different roles from lay counsellors, tracers, data capturers and filing clerks. We also have 20 learners in the North West who are currently undergoing training by Aurum staff and will be based at the facilities within this month.

Adolescent and Youth Psychosocial Interventions To improve the health outcomes of adolescents (up to 19 years old) and youth (up to 24 years old or above depending on the facility) and their access to health care, Aurum is working with service providers to create youth friendly environments. Aurum has partnered with Pathfinder International for Youth Friendly Services Accreditation. Pathfinder trains, coordinates and mentors staff in districts and assists nurses in DOH facilities to achieve their accreditation.

Paediatric Psychosocial Interventions In an effort to create Child Friendly Services through the Kidz Alive Accreditation process, Aurum has partnered with Zoe Life to train, coordinate and provide technical support in DOH facilities for the Kidz Alive roll out.
Training includes upskilling nurses in districts and assisting nurses in achieving their child friendly services accreditation. The objective of the Kidz Alive Accreditation process is to create child friendly environments which will improve child access to healthcare.

Aurum and Youth

It is clear to see that Aurum is doing a lot of tangible impact work for youth everywhere. And with an average employee age of 35, it is clear to see why. Let's continue to celebrate African Youth month and acknowledge the important role we play in creating TB and HIV free Africa for generations to come.
